ODM: Be Prepared! Time to Check/Restock Your Disaster Supply Kit

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY, (DCOMM) – The Office of Disaster Management (ODM) which falls under the Fire Department (Ministry of General Affairs) headed by Fire Chief/Disaster Coordinator Clive Richardson, appeals to all residents and businesses to plan ahead and let’s ‘Be Prepared’ for a forecasted extremely active 2024 Atlantic hurricane season which begins on Saturday, June 1 and runs through November 30.

ODM calls on residents to review the content of their Disaster Kit and to start restocking it with the essentials that are necessary to ride out the hurricane season.

Every household’s Disaster Kit should be able to support members of the household for a minimum of seven days after the hurricane has passed.

The Disaster Kit should contain non-perishable food, water and medicine (fill prescriptions before the storm); non-electric can opener; first-aid kit; extra cash (ATM machines and credit cards won’t work if there is no electricity); a battery powered radio and flashlights as well as extra batteries; make sure cell phones are all charged prior to the arrival of the hurricane; fill up your car/truck with gas; check if your home and automobile insurance are up to date; put ID cards, passports and driver’s license, insurance papers in a waterproof bag along with other important documents.

If you are a parent with an infant or young child (ren), you also need to have essential items as part of your disaster supply kit: baby formula; diapers; bottles; powdered milk; medications; moist towels; and diaper rash ointment.

Your Disaster Kit must also include hand sanitizer, a soap bar or liquid soap; two cloth face coverings for each person; disinfecting wipes, or general household cleaning supplies to disinfect surfaces.

Now is the time to trim back tree branches from your home; cut all dead or weak branches on any trees on your property; clean-up your yard and put away items that could blow away during the passing of a hurricane; check your roof and storm shutters to make sure they are secure, and the latter are working.

For those whose homes are not yet storm/hurricane ready, you should make alternative housing arrangements to stay with family or friends.

The community is urged to learn more about hurricane hazards and how to prepare for a storm/hurricane strike by visiting the Government website: www.sintmaartengov.org/hurricane where you will be able to download your “Hurricane Season Readiness Guide’ and “Hurricane Tracking Chart.”

Listen to the Government Radio station – SXMGOV 107.9FM - for official information and news before, during and after a hurricane. You can also follow weather related news and information as well as national addresses by the Prime Minister, chairperson of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) by going to @SXMGOV Facebook Page.

Police arrest “man in black” spotted smashing TVs at demo

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – Police have arrested a man suspected of being one of the “men in black” filmed smashing television screens in the university building at the Roeterseiland campus in Amsterdam during a pro-Palestine demonstration on Monday.

Officers who had cleared the university premises recognised the man, who was apprehended on Dam Square following the incidents which concluded an otherwise peaceful gathering.

The only information police released was that the man is 35-years-old, making it unlikely he is a student. The investigation into his identity and affiliation is ongoing and police are calling for people to send them video footage of the event.

The masked men in black entered the university shortly after a demonstration outside the university had ended. “The atmosphere changed immediately,” university board chairman Geert ten Dam told NOS.

Ten Dam said the group managed to penetrate the building up to the 6th floor, where the boardroom is situated, and that university workers fled in a panic as they approached.

Ten Dam said board members were not present on Monday but if they had they would have fled as well. “We cannot rule out the board being a target,” she told the NRC.

Amsterdam Encampment, one of the organisations behind the demonstrations, claimed it had no knowledge of the group’s affiliation either and was reluctant to comment, Amsterdam-based broadcaster AT5 said. “Because the damage to the university buildings is nothing compared to the bombed universities in Gaza,” a spokesman told the broadcaster.

Many of the protesters are in the dark about the identity of the group as well, AT5 found. Some said they think the group is opposed to the protests and is trying to disrupt them, while others supposed they were hooligans intent on doing as much damage as they could.

Men in black were also spotted during last week’s demonstrations attacking protestors and setting off fireworks.

The universities have published a new demo protocol saying they will not negotiate with masked protesters. A majority of MPs wants students to show ID on entering university premises to prevent the demonstrations from being hijacked by non-students, the Volkskrant reported.

Parties edge closer to finish line in Dutch cabinet negotiations

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – The parties trying to form a right-wing government in the Netherlands are said to have settled their differences on migration, days before the talks reach a crucial deadline.

The two negotiators leading the third round of negotiations, Richard van Zwol and Elbert Dijkgraaf, are due deliver their conclusions to parliament by 11.55pm on Wednesday and have said there will be no extension.

Last week there were signs of progress as the four parties sat around the negotiating table for up to 10 hours a day and met again on Saturday, after several weeks of mostly separate discussions with Van Zwol and Dijkgraaf.

The four parties have also submitted their financial plans to the economic planning agency CPB, another sign that the talks have moved onto the substantive issues.

Public spending is said to be one of the main sticking points in the negotiations, with the right-wing Liberal VVD demanding an austerity plan to keep the national deficit within the EU limit of 3%, while Geert Wilders’s far-right PVV wants to boost spending on social security and healthcare.

Van Zwol and Dijkgraaf were cautious about the prospect of a breakthrough as they arrived at the talks on Monday morning.

“Constructive” talks

Dijkgraaf said he was “a little more optimistic”, but added: “You never know what will pop up. We’re taking it day by day.”

Wilders was more bullish about the chances of reaching an agreement, as the AD newspaper quoted sources saying that the four parties had concluded their discussions on immigration.

“All I can say now is that we’re all doing our best and the finish is in sight,” Wilders said. He described the negotiations as “constructive”.

Prime minister

Wilders also said he had found and contacted a suitable candidate for the role of prime minister, but gave no hints as to who it might be.

Conventionally the leader of the largest party in the coalition becomes prime minister, but the four party leaders agreed in an earlier stage of talks that none of them would take up the post.

Caroline van der Plas, leader of the farmers’ party BBB, said she was “hopeful” of an agreement, while VVD leader Dilan Yesilgöz and Pieter Omtzigt, of the centre-right NSC, were tight-lipped.

Omtzigt struck a less optimistic note last Friday when he said there were still “significant differences” in the parties’ positions.

The NSC leader has said the new cabinet must uphold international treaties, court judgments and the terms of EU membership, but has also called for labour and student migration numbers to be cut drastically.

Omtzigt left the first stage of talks early in February, but was brought back to the negotiating table after the parties agreed to form a “programme cabinet”, half of whose members will be appointed from outside the political parties.
