Day 1: Big Breeze and Big Moments Kick off Racing at the 46th St. Maarten Heineken Regatta https://www.soualiganewsday.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=64722:day-1-big-breeze-and-big-moments-kick-off-racing-at-the-46th-st-maarten-heineken-regatta&Itemid=504 https://www.soualiganewsday.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=64722:day-1-big-breeze-and-big-moments-kick-off-racing-at-the-46th-st-maarten-heineken-regatta&Itemid=504

SINT MAARTEN (SIMPSON BAY) - It was a dramatic start to the first day of racing as teams made their way to the start areas in Simpson Bay and Cole Bay this morning to kick off the 46th edition of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. As sailors shook out sails ahead of the first warning signal at 09:40, dark skies rolled in and a massive Caribbean squall swept across the island, briefly engulfing the fleet in sheets of rain and powerful gusts.

For a moment, the fleet disappeared behind a curtain of rain as the squall passed over the racecourse, delaying the starts slightly. But once the weather system cleared, the clouds gave way to a picture-perfect Caribbean race day. Sunshine returned, the wind settled into a steady 20+ knots, and rolling five-foot swells set the stage for a thrilling and demanding opening day on the water. It was fast starts and full sends across the fleet!

Racing stretched along the Dutch coastline from Baie Longue to Point Blanche, with classes competing on a mix of coastal and windward-leeward courses. Start Boat B in Simpson Bay hosted the Multihull 1, Multihull 2, Bareboat 1, Bareboat 2, Diam 24s, and Island Time classes. The strong breeze forced some multihull teams to reef early while others chose to go all-in on the opening upwind legs.

One boat wasted no time establishing dominance. SOPHIA shot ahead immediately after crossing the start line and quickly separated from the fleet, delivering a commanding performance in Multihull 1. “My crew is very experienced. I have one guy who’s been racing on the boat for 4 years and another for 8. I have a professional bowman as well. I don’t have to do much. I just sit and steer!,” said owner Marcos Sirota who just got the boat last year. “There are some boats we definitely have to watch for. Calamity, the MG5, the gunboat. It’s going to be a very close competition.”

In the Bareboat fleet, it was a striking sight as Shore Thing and Harbor House Out rounded a mark well ahead of the rest of the tightly packed fleet. Both teams hail from the Netherlands and are competing in the Regatta for the first time. “This is a long time coming. The Regatta has been on our bucket list forever. We’re here to enjoy the sailing – and the parties!,” said the crew aboard Harbor House Out. Their strong start paid off, with both teams earning podium spots in the Bareboat 1 class.

Meanwhile in Cole Bay, the CSA 1-6 classes and the Melges 24 fleet launched from Start Boat A into equally challenging conditions. Across the racecourse, sailors battled gusty winds, powerful swells, and high-speed downwind legs that tested crews and equipment alike. The day delivered everything from photo finishes and overpowered spinnakers to dramatic hourglass wraps and even blown sails as teams pushed their boats to the limit.

The racing quickly proved that the classes are extremely well matched this year. Windward marks became action-packed zones as crews fought for position in the strong breeze. At one mark rounding in CSA4, Bella J shouted across the course, “Get out of the way!” when Morpheus overshot the mark and drifted directly into their path — one of many moments where heavy wind and waves caused boats to overshoot and scramble to recover.

The highly competitive CSA4 class delivered some of the closest racing of the day. Belladonna, the crew who won the overall regatta last year, started their title defense in strong form by taking the win in all three races of the day. “We’re going to try and go for the win again,” said skipper Steve Rigby of the UK team. “It’s a new boat for us this year, so we’re still learning the setup.”

Local favorite Dauntless followed closely behind in second place, while Jackknife, the J/125 from Great Britain with an energetic young crew averaging around 25 years old, secured third place after a strong performance. Last year’s class winner Apollo sits in fourth place after Day 1 but remains firmly in the hunt. “We’re hoping to be on the podium again — a repeat of last year,” said the Apollo crew. “This boat really likes heavy air, and we have a confident crew that knows how to handle it.” With several strong contenders in the mix, CSA4 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting battles of the regatta.

The CSA3 class features one of the most diverse fleets in the regatta, with boats of varying designs, lengths, and performance characteristics. Leading the fleet after Day 1 is influence2, a Class 40 from Italy. “We don’t maneuver very well,” the team admitted about their offshore-optimized race boat, “but we are good experienced sailors.” Close behind was Fujimo, an IOR 50, sailing with a lively mixed crew of twelve with varying experience levels. With no professionals onboard, the enthusiastic team is aiming high. “We want to get third at the worst!” the crew said with a laugh. With such varied boats, CSA3 promises more exciting matchups in the days ahead.

The demanding conditions meant not every team made it through the full race schedule. Several boats recorded DNF, DNS, and retirements, including Team JAJO, who returned to port early after experiencing issues with their keel hydraulic system. A handful of boats in the Island Time class also retired early due to the strong breeze. The tough conditions also brought many protests across the classes. But despite the challenges, sailors returned to shore energized after a thrilling opening day.

Each day of the regatta highlights one of the event’s four key values: Sustainability, Inclusivity, Generations, and Celebration. Today’s focus was sustainability, and the regatta launched an exciting new environmental initiative in partnership with the Marine Mammal Advisory Group and JASCO Applied Sciences. This year, the Regatta is deploying the region’s first marine mammal acoustic monitoring system at a sailing event, helping detect whale activity in the waters surrounding the island.

Resident humpback whales including a recently spotted mother and calf have been seen near the island over the past month, making monitoring efforts especially important to reduce the risk of vessel strikes. Onboard one of the finish boats, scientist Sam Denes monitored whale activity in real time with a hydrophone and relayed information to race officials.

“My career has been focused on balancing concerns about the environment with human activities. By providing greater knowledge, stakeholders can make more informed decisions. By leveraging passive acoustic monitoring, we are enabling greater stewardship of the environment from these events. We can provide information that can support decisions that will increase safety for participants and marine life. It’s a win-win and I am excited to be a part of this endeavor,” said Sam Denes, marine bioacoustician from JASCO Applied Sciences.

Not only are the whales staying safe this year, but so are the sailors! The Regatta is excited to announce Harken Derm as a new sponsor of the event, providing sailors and staff with reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the health of our oceans and to spread awareness.

The Port de Plaisance Regatta Village officially opened its gates at 4 PM with free entry for the public, welcoming sailors and visitors ready to unwind after a challenging day of racing. A press conference was also held at Divan Café with discussions highlighting the impact and distinction of the Regatta and the positive influence it continues to have on the island year after year.

To kick off the festivities, prize giving began at 6 PM as competitors celebrated surviving the first day of big wind sailing. By 7 PM, the Fountain Stage came alive with Caribbean sounds from DJ Prince, DJ Ika, SEE5 Band, Karma Killswitch and more.

Tomorrow, the fleet will turn its attention to one of the Regatta’s iconic race days – Around the Island. The French side of St. Martin would like to remind teams and spectators about the general environmental regulations that must be strictly observed within the Reserve in order to ensure the Reserve’s sensitive ecosystems:

  • Anchoring is strictly prohibited within the Nature Reserve.
  • Drone overflights are not permitted within the protected area.
  • Landing or disembarkation of vessels is strictly prohibited at Creole Rock.
  • Particular attention must be given to diving sites and to swimmers within the 300-meter coastal zone bordering the shoreline.

With strong winds expected to continue, sailors can look forward to another legendary day of racing. Day 2 promises even more unforgettable moments — and plenty more #SeriousFun!

Safe Holiday Meal Preparation for the 2025 Christmas Holiday Season https://www.soualiganewsday.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=64019:safe-holiday-meal-preparation-for-the-2025-christmas-holiday-season&Itemid=504 https://www.soualiganewsday.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=64019:safe-holiday-meal-preparation-for-the-2025-christmas-holiday-season&Itemid=504

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY, (DCOMM) – As the clock ticks down to Christmas 2025, families have already been looking at their holiday meal options and shopping requirements, and these final days will be very busy.

Cooking up a storm for this holiday season is one of the Christmas traditions, and therefore proper food preparation is key to avoid food-borne health hazards that can ruin more than just a holiday meal – they can cause serious illness and even death.

Double check expiration dates on food items prior to purchasing or for use in meal preparation.

As part of Collective Prevention Services (CPS), Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labor Safe Holiday Season calendar of observances, in collaboration with the Department of Communication (DCOMM), residents are advised to keep the season safe by following some tips on how to enjoy holiday meals safely.

Here are some tips to avoid bacteria growing in your meals and delicious dishes:

  1. Use a thermometer. Be sure stuffing, chicken and any other poultry dishes are cooked thoroughly to 165 degrees F; ground beef and ham must be cooked thoroughly to 155 degrees F. All other foods, including eggs should be cooked to 145 degrees F.
  1. Do not leave foods containing meat, milk, eggs, fish, or poultry at room temperature for more than four hours. This includes pudding and custard-type pies that are popular during the holidays.
  1. Cool all leftovers to 41 degrees F within four hours after cooking.
  1. Do not thaw food at room temperature. Plan ahead and thaw them in the refrigerator. If the food needs to be thawed quickly, use the microwave or cold running water, and then cook promptly after it has thawed.
  1. If you are traveling with food, be sure to keep it cold 41. F. or hot 140 F or above while transporting.
  1. After the big meal, be sure to refrigerate any leftovers within 1 hour. Bacteria love room temperatures and grow quickly in amounts enough to make people ill.

To Prevent Food from Becoming Contaminated

  1. Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and warm water before food preparation and after coughing, sneezing, using the toilet, changing diapers, eating, drinking, or smoking. If you have diarrhea or are feeling ill, avoid handling food in order to prevent the transmitting or spreading of oral/fecal infections.
  1. Do not prepare or handle food if you are ill; a cook’s gastrointestinal illness could be spread to others sharing the meal.
  2. Thoroughly clean and sanitize knives, cutting boards and other utensils before and after preparing raw foods and foods that do not require further cooking. Sanitize with a solution of one tablespoon of bleach per gallon of water.
  1. Wash all fresh fruits and vegetables.

Contrary to popular belief, if you do become ill from contaminated food, it is not always the last meal you ate that’s the culprit. Food-borne illness can occur anywhere from one hour to 72 hours and even longer after eating contaminated food.

Please help make the 2025 holiday season be a safe one by paying attention to proper food preparation and handling techniques. Happy Holidays!

National Institute for Human Rights expands its work in the Caribbean Netherlands https://www.soualiganewsday.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=63701:national-institute-for-human-rights-expands-its-work-in-the-caribbean-netherlands&Itemid=504 https://www.soualiganewsday.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=63701:national-institute-for-human-rights-expands-its-work-in-the-caribbean-netherlands&Itemid=504

SABA/SINT EUSTATIUS – As of 1 January 2026, the Equal Treatment Legislation will come into effect on Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. Consequently, the National Institute for Human Rights will take on additional tasks on the islands.

Residents of the Caribbean Netherlands will be able to file a complaint with the independent Institute if they believe they have been discriminated against, just like in the European Netherlands.

The Institute will assess whether discrimination has occurred. In some cases, mediation may be more appropriate. If so, the Institute will offer this. To support these new tasks, Solange Christiaan and Gerald Simmons-de Jong have been appointed as Deputy Board Members.

They will handle discrimination cases on the Caribbean Netherlands. This week, Rick Lawson, the new president of the Institute, is visiting all three islands with colleagues, to meet with important organisations and visit the Institute’s locations on the islands.

Lokèt Hurídiko and Legal Desks on the islands

Everyone deserves equal treatment and access to justice. A Lokèt Hurídiko will therefore be established on Bonaire, as well as Legal Desks on Sint Eustatius and Saba. From the first half of 2026, residents can go there for free assistance with questions about their rights and about experiences with discrimination.

This includes questions about housing, work, debts or benefits. But also about situations where people feel they have been treated unequally, for instance because of their nationality, pregnancy or disability.

Regarding discrimination or unequal treatment, the Lokèt Hurídiko or Legal Desk can also help residents with submitting a complaint to the Institute. Together, these organizations will ensure that people in the Caribbean Netherlands are better protected and can find the right help more easily. Residents may also file a request directly with the Institute from 1 January 2026 onwards.

Presence of the Institute in the Caribbean Netherlands

Solange Christiaan and Gerald Simmons-de Jong have been appointed to assess discrimination cases on the islands. They bring along broad legal knowledge and extensive experience in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.

Solange Christiaan has served for eleven years as a judge at the Joint Court of Justice of Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten and of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. Gerald Simmons-de Jong is the founder of law firm DEJONG, with offices on Saba and Sint Maarten and, soon, on Bonaire. In addition, Moramay Koomen has been appointed as a legal advisor at the Institute, and will handle incoming discrimination complaints.

“It is great to see that Equal Treatment Legislation will also apply on Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. We all live in small communities here, where everyone knows each other. This can make it difficult to speak up when you feel discriminated against. We hope that the Institute’s presence will empower residents to address unequal treatment,” said Deputy Board Member Simmons-de Jong.

With these new additions, the Institute is expanding its activities and expertise in the Caribbean Netherlands. For hearings, the Institute will make use of the facilities of the Joint Court of Justice on all three islands. Alongside handling discrimination complaints, the Institute’s tasks on the Caribbean Netherlands also include advising, researching and raising awareness on human rights.

Members also exchanged updates on the monitoring of national action plans and got the opportunity to exchange with Aruba’s Children’s Rights Commission.

The program concluded with optional field visits to Scol basico Dornasol and Scol Dun' un man, both of which support children with special needs in education.

The Taskforce expressed gratitude to the Government of Aruba for its warm hospitality and successful organization of the meeting. The islands reaffirmed their joint commitment to ensuring that every child in the Kingdom can grow up safely, with equal opportunities and access to care, education, and protection.

CPS: World Food Day – Thursday. Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future https://www.soualiganewsday.com/index.php%3Foption%3Dcom_k2%26amp%3Bview%3Ditem%26amp%3Bid%3D63236%3Acps-world-food-day-%E2%80%93-thursday-hand-in-hand-for-better-foods-and-a-better-future%26amp%3BItemid%3D504 https://www.soualiganewsday.com/index.php%3Foption%3Dcom_k2%26amp%3Bview%3Ditem%26amp%3Bid%3D63236%3Acps-world-food-day-%E2%80%93-thursday-hand-in-hand-for-better-foods-and-a-better-future%26amp%3BItemid%3D504

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY, (DCOMM) – World Food Day (WFD) will be marked around the globe on Thursday, October 16 under the theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future.”

According to the United Nations (UN) Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), is calling for global collaboration in creating a peaceful, sustainable, prosperous, and food-secure future.

“By working together, across governments, organizations, sectors, and communities, we can transform agrifood systems to ensure that everyone has access to a healthy diet, living in harmony with the planet,” the FAO says.

FAO adds, Agrifood systems are facing unprecedented challenges. “Conflict, the impacts of extreme weather and climate events, economic shocks, and rising inequality are placing mounting pressure on the land we farm, the water we depend on, and the biodiversity that supports life. Supply chains remain fragile, and the effects of disruption are being felt in homes, markets, and fields around the world.”

In some places, the severity of food insecurity is overwhelming. An estimated 673 million people world-wide are living with hunger. Elsewhere, rising levels of obesity and widespread food waste point to a system out of balance—where abundance and absence coexist, often side by side, the FAO pointed out.

Collective Prevention Services (CPS), a department from the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labor, as part of its annual public health calendar of observances, in connection with World Food Day, households are reminded to consume a diversity of nutritious foods on a daily basis.

CPS reminds the community that healthy diets are diverse, balanced in energy, and adequate to meet nutrient needs, along with wasting less, and helping to protect the soil, water, and biodiversity that make food possible.

CPS adds that there is a critical link between sustainability, healthy eating and national public health resilience. Unhealthy diets are one of the leading preventable risk factors for non-communicable diseases. Prevention is paramount.

CPS appeals to every resident and every institution—from schools to supermarkets—to actively choose and promote nutritious food systems. A sustainable diet is not just about what is available, but what we consume daily. It’s about eating more locally sourced produce, choosing whole grains over processed foods, and limiting excess sugar and sodium.

CPS advises consumers to read the label and to actively check food labels for sugar, salt, and fat content to make informed purchasing decisions.

Promote the establishment of community and backyard gardens to increase access to fresh, affordable produce and reduce reliance on imported goods.

The choices we make every day shape the world we live in. #Nourishing Our Future

Minister of VSA statement on World Mental Health Day https://www.soualiganewsday.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=63186:minister-of-vsa-statement-on-world-mental-health-day&Itemid=504 https://www.soualiganewsday.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=63186:minister-of-vsa-statement-on-world-mental-health-day&Itemid=504

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) – On Friday, October 10, 2025, to mark World Mental Health Day, the Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor Richinel Brug released the following statement:

Mental Health lives in our homes, our communities, and in the quiet moments we all face.

Over the years, our resilience has been tested. The devastation of Hurricane Irma and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic left lasting impacts—not just on our economy and infrastructure, but on our hearts and minds.

But beyond these major events, many among us continue to face daily battles. The pressure of making ends meet, the struggle to put food on the table, the weight of trying to provide a better future for our children—all of these take a toll.

And for our single parents, many of whom carry these burdens alone, the emotional and mental strain can be overwhelming. We see you. We hear you. And we are working to build a system that supports you—not just in crisis, but every day.

As Minister of Public Health, I have placed mental health high on the Ministry’s agenda. Our goal is clear: to make mental health care more accessible, to reduce stigma, and to create a culture where seeking help is seen as a sign of strength—not weakness.

Take a moment for yourself. Check in with a friend. Be kind—to yourself and to others. Our strength as a country lies in how we care for one another.

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY, (DCOMM) – Friday 10 October marks World Mental Health Day around the world under the theme, “Mental health in humanitarian emergencies.”

World Mental Health Day serves as a powerful reminder that there is no health without mental health, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday. This year’s campaign focuses on the urgent need to support the mental health and psychosocial needs of people affected by humanitarian emergencies.

Globally, crises such as natural disasters, conflicts, and public health emergencies cause emotional distress, with one in five individuals experiencing a mental health condition. Supporting the mental well-being of individuals during such crises is not just important – it saves lives, gives people the strength to cope, the space to heal and to recover and rebuild not only as individuals but as communities.

Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well, and work well, and contribute to their community. Mental health is a basic human right.

According to the WHO, “That’s why it is essential for everyone, including government officials, health and social care providers, school staff and community groups to come together. By working hand in hand, we can ensure the most vulnerable have access to the support they need while protecting the well-being of everyone.

“By investing in evidence and community-based interventions, we can address immediate mental health needs, foster long-term recovery, and empower people and communities to rebuild their lives and thrive.

“On this World Mental Health Day, let us intensify our efforts to create a world where mental health is valued, protected, and accessible for all, especially in the face of adversity,” the WHO appealed on the occasion of World Mental Health Day.

Mental health is a universal human right underscoring the importance of ensuring everyone has the right to access quality mental health care and support.

Collective Prevention Services (CPS), a department from the Sint Maarten Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labor, says creating awareness about mental health is part of CPS’ annual calendar of health observances.

For persons who need support, the Sint Maarten Mental Health Organization (MHF) provides psychiatric care services to the population of the country. Its mission includes prevention to mitigate as much as possible the negative impact of mental disorders on individual’s wellbeing and on society.

For general information on mental health issues, you can call 542-1677 or for a mental health crisis, you can call the crisis line 585-5556 which will be answered by a professional and it’s confidential.

For more information, you can call CPS 542-1570 or 914.

Sint Maarten Under Tropical Storm Warning .Government Offices Closed on Friday. Essential Services Remain Operational https://www.soualiganewsday.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=63174:sint-maarten-under-tropical-storm-warning-government-offices-closed-on-friday-essential-services-remain-operational&Itemid=504 https://www.soualiganewsday.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=63174:sint-maarten-under-tropical-storm-warning-government-offices-closed-on-friday-essential-services-remain-operational&Itemid=504

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina has announced the closure of all non-essential government offices on Friday, October 10, 2025, as a precautionary measure in anticipation of the expected impacts from Tropical Storm Jerry.

This decision follows close consultation with the Meteorological Department of St. Maarten (MDS) and the Office of Disaster Management (ODM).

According to the 2:00 P.M. advisory issued by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and relayed by MDS, a Tropical Storm Warning is now in effect for St. Maarten, meaning tropical-storm-force conditions are expected within the next 24 hours.

At 2:00 PM, the center of Tropical Storm Jerry was located near latitude 16.5° N, longitude 60.0° W, moving west-northwest at 18 mph with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 km/h).

The storm’s closest point of approach is projected to be approximately 75 miles northeast of the island on Friday, bringing tropical-storm-force winds, heavy rainfall, and rough seas.

“Tropical Storm Jerry is expected to bring periods of heavy rain, gusty winds, and rough seas beginning tonight,” stated Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina.

“While we are not expecting a direct hit, the effects of this system could still pose serious risks to public safety. Therefore, we are taking every precaution to safeguard the lives of our citizens and public servants.”

Prime Minister Mercelina emphasized that the decision to close government offices was made out of an abundance of caution, noting that tropical systems can often behave unpredictably.

“As Prime Minister, I prefer to ensure that this situation is handled in a safe and responsible manner for the people of St. Maarten,” he said. “The temporary closure of government offices allows everyone the opportunity to prepare properly, minimize movement during hazardous weather, and protect themselves and their families.”

The Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall accumulations of 2 to 4 inches, with the heaviest activity expected Friday night into Saturday. Gusty winds up to 65 mph (100 km/h) and seas reaching 12 feet are anticipated, particularly along coastal areas. These conditions may result in flash flooding, rockfalls, and localized damage, especially in low-lying and flood-prone communities.

In light of these hazards, non-essential government offices will remain closed on Friday, while essential services—including the police, fire department, medical facilities, and disaster management agencies—will remain fully operational to ensure public safety.

“Your safety is our highest priority,” Prime Minister Mercelina added.

“The government is working in close coordination with emergency agencies and monitoring the storm’s development around the clock. Let us remain calm, vigilant, and united as we navigate this weather event together.”

The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has not been officially activated at this time. The government continues to closely monitor weather developments, and further actions will be determined as new information becomes available.

The Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication (TEATT) will assess conditions and make a decision regarding the possible closure of businesses following updated forecasts later this evening.

Residents are strongly advised to:

Monitor official updates from the Meteorological Department of St. Maarten (www.meteosxm.com) and the Department of Communication of Government (DCOMM).

Avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions.

Secure outdoor items and clear drainage areas to reduce flooding risks.

Exercise extreme caution near coastal areas, where rough seas and rip currents will be dangerous.

Further announcements will be made following the 5:00 p.m. weather update from MDS and any subsequent government advisories.

“Together, through preparedness and care for one another, we will ensure the safety and resilience of our country,” concluded Prime Minister Dr. Mercelina.
