SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – A policeman from Maastricht has been suspended on suspicion of pocketing thousands of euros in cash paid for on-the-spot traffic fines.
The case came to light when a Belgian tourist disagreed with the fine handed out to him in Maastricht and made a formal complaint.
The police officer appears to have targeted at least 15 Belgian nationals, ordering them to pay fines of up to €260 and to use an ATM to withdraw the money if they did not have the cash available, the public prosecution department said.
The public prosecution department is now investigating whether more drivers were conned into handing over money. (DutchNews)
