SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – A 27-year-old man from Zaandam who caused a fatal accident on a country road last October has been jailed for three years and banned from driving for five on his release.
Fatih K had been drinking when he got into his car and drove off in the dark, despite others warning him not to, news agency ANP said. When overtaking another car, despite the double white line in the middle of the road, he crashed into an oncoming car, killing the driver.
The public prosecution department had called for a four year jail sentence.
Meanwhile, a 20-year-old man who killed a 62-year-old cyclist in Rijswijk during an illegal race, faces nine months in jail and a four-year driving ban. His 19-year-old friend faces seven months in jail and a four year ban for driving off after the accident.
The two men were racing against each other, reaching speeds of up to 93 kph in an area where the maximum limit is 50 kph, the court was told on Thursday. The men deny they were racing. (DutchNews)
