Red Cross is reaching out to communities about relief and recovery programs. Starts information sessions

SINT MAARTEN (SIMPSON BAY) - In collaboration with Community Councils, the Netherlands Red Cross, through its St. Maarten branch, is organizing information sessions about “our current recovery programs in the nine neighborhoods the Red Cross has focused on since the onset of the response to Hurricane Irma (Cay Bay, Cay Hill, Cole Bay, Dutch Quarter, Fort Willem, Middle Region, Over the Bank, St. Peters, and Sucker Garden),” the Red Cross said in a press statement on Wednesday.

Launches Second Phase Supermarket Voucher Program

“Currently, the Red Cross has three programs aimed at helping families who have been impacted by Hurricane Irma. The Red Cross has launched the second phase of the Supermarket Voucher program through which families in need receive Red Cross food vouchers allowing them to purchase groceries in participating supermarkets.

Home Repair Completes First Assessments

“In addition, the Home Repair program has completed its first assessments, with technical officers providing expertise and the Red Cross providing materials to support families in the repair of their homes. Finally, the School Meal program, which provides breakfasts and hot lunches to thousands of students each day, has been extended until the end of the school year.

“Our programs are aimed at meeting the evolving needs of the population, from early and intermediate relief like school meals and supermarket vouchers, to helping people with the materials and expertise needed to repair their homes. These meetings are a way for us to update our beneficiaries on our activities and give them a glimpse at upcoming programs,” says Michele Sanchez, head of mission for the Netherlands Red Cross.

Information Sessions

The first information sessions will take place on: Thursday April 5 in Cay Bay, Monday April 9 in Middle Region, and Wednesday April 11 in Sucker Garden.

The Red Cross, in collaboration with the Cay Bay Community Council, invites all residents of Cay Bay to Alex’s Yard on April 5 at 7 pm.

Details about and invitations for additional meetings in other neighborhoods will be communicated in the coming weeks on social media as well as via radio. For additional information, you can call the St. Maarten Red Cross at 545 2333/2304.
