SINT MAARTEN (PHILIPSBURG) - National Alliance (NA) Leader Member of Parliament (MP) Silveria Jacobs speaking on behalf of Sint Maarten delegation at the Inter-Parliamentary Kingdom Consultations (IPKO) on Tuesday January 8, 2019, during the afternoon session on the topic of Venezuela, MP Jacobs reacted to statements made by Dutch Second Chamber MPs in response to requests from MPs from Curacao and Aruba for help in dealing with this situation.
It is well established that heavy migration of refugees/immigrants from Venezuela has had serious consequences on the islands of Curacao, Aruba and now also on Sint Maarten.
The islands would like to see the Dutch assist in as much as the Kingdom Charter dictates, "...belooft elkaar bij te staan..." with a sense of humanity for their fellow man, especially as they have done similarly for the bordering countries of Venezuela.
Some Dutch MPs were of the opinion that it is the islands' problem to solve, while the islands claim an inability to do so.
The meeting adjourned with a meeting of Presidium and the planning to reconvene the plenary session on Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at 10:00 to deliberate in what MPs hope will be a more amicable setting in which a solution in the best interest of the constituent countries will be sought.
