Gasoline and Diesel prices to be adjusted Upward on Tuesday

SINT MAARTEN (PHILIPSBURG) – On Tuesday, February 17, fuel pump prices will be adjusted for gasoline and diesel.

The current price of unleaded gasoline is Naf.2.074 per liter, will be adjusted to the new price of Naf.2.195 per liter.

The current price of diesel is Naf.1.766 per liter, will be adjusted to the new price of Naf.1.908 per liter.

The Government of Sint Maarten regulates the prices of petroleum products by imposing a maximum price at which wholesalers and retailers can sell these products in the country to motorists.

At the international level, the prices of crude oil have experienced adjustments and local prices follow the international trend, and therefore prices are adjusted to reflect this.

AI's next advance: behavioral, not technical

SINT MAARTEN (COMMENTARY - by Cdr. Bud Slabbaert) - AI is advancing faster than our understanding of human behavior. AI is powerful but the human mind is sovereign. Humanity leads, technology evolves. AI is not the future. People are the future and AI is a tool that helps to get there. If AI guides decisions, who guides AI? Aligning AI with human behavioral science is not philosophical, it’s practical.

When artificial intelligence is discussed, speed, scale and power are emphasized. Rarely the one thing AI touches most deeply: human behavior. The paradox of the moment is that the most influential behavioral technology in history is designed to amplify human capability, yet it is done without the behavioral sciences at the center. AI serves the mind, but the mind remains sovereign. Humanity leads, AI Serves.

I’m not just participating in the AI-conversations. I’m reframing it, giving it a conscience, direction and purpose. A Human‑Centered AI Revolution begins with the oldest principle in the book: start with the humans and AI becomes a partner in human growth, a scaffold for creativity, a catalyst for learning and a tool for empowerment. A movement that insists on the future of AI must be guided by behavioral science, cultural insight, and a profound respect for the people it serves.

Artificial intelligence is transforming economies, labor, education, and information flows worldwide. More importantly, AI is changing human behavior, how people learn, make decisions, form beliefs, interact, and engage in society. Despite this broad impact, AI development is mainly driven by technical frameworks, with little input from behavioral science, cultural perspectives, or affected communities, thereby creating an unsustainable imbalance. AI without behavioral science is guesswork at scale.

When dealing with people, the use of AI requires behavior psychological literacy. There’s an assumption that humans will “just adapt”. That may be the biggest blind spot. The next great leap in AI must come from a deeper understanding of behavior, emotion, culture and of humanity. Because if AI is going to guide decisions, it must understand decision‑making. If it is going to shape habits, it must understand habit formation. If it is going to influence culture, it must understand culture. The real question is how does one make AI understand this? Without it, one gets systems optimized for efficiency, not humanity. The world needs human‑centered intelligence because the future will still be human. Humanity is not a feature; it is the standard and the foundation.

The current unfolding real tension is that the AI conversation is racing ahead, while the behavioral‑science conversation is lagging behind. Most AI talk is dominated by visionaries, changemakers, founders, engineers, and investors. They tend to frame AI as a tool, a system or an optimizing opportunity. To a certain extent they may be right. Yet there may be a disconnect. Behavioral science frames AI as a tool shaping human behavior, or a social force, or …... a psychological influence. Those two worldviews rarely meet unless someone intentionally bridges them. Design for people, not just performance.

This is what I consider the “Human‑Centered AI Revolution” grounded in behavioral science. Where intelligence has intention and begins with people. It differentiates from the typical “AI hype” narrative and reframes the conversation around human psychology, culture, and activity. If one wants AI to elevate humanity, one must begin with humanity. That is the idea worth spreading. And that is the future; if one is to build a future where AI strengthens and stabilizes societies, then one must adopt the Human Standard. The AI–Behavioral Science Disconnect is equivalent to communicating without knowing who one is communicating with. Understanding humans is the real intelligence.

Safe Together Strong Together: one year of working together on domestic safety

SABA/SINT EUSTATIUS - Since 1 January 2025, the Protection Code BES – Kodigo di Protekshon / Beschermingscode – has been in effect. These regulations assist professionals and citizens in recognising signals of domestic violence and child abuse in an early stage and in working on protection and safety together.

With the introduction of the compulsory Protection Code BES, the Safe Together Strong Together campaign was also launched to raise awareness of domestic violence and child abuse. Because a safe home environment is not self-evident. Everybody deserves a place where they feel safe — and nobody needs to face things alone.

Support for professionals: the Protection Code BES

The protection code is a step-by-step plan for professionals in the care, education, and judicial sector for situations where they suspect someone is not safe at home. This step-by-step plan is called the Protection Code BES and is compulsory for organisations in these sectors. In 2025 Care and Youth Caribbean Netherlands (ZJCN) supported these organisations, which are now required to have a protection code, during the implementation and application of this protection code. This support is continued in 2026.

Safe Together Strong Together

The slogan Safe Together Strong Together stands for a shared responsibility. The protection of children, young persons, and vulnerable adults is not a duty of one professional or body but something we do together: government, professionals, parents, neighbours, schools, and the community as a whole. Only by being vigilant and taking action together can we enhance safety.

Discussions with islanders
The campaign initially focused on professionals and later in 2025 also on citizens. Through questionnaires it was examined what people know and need in order to recognise signals of unsafe situations and to discuss them openly. Discussions about safety and responsibility were held with young persons at secondary schools on all three islands and on Saba and St. Eustatius open sunset gatherings were organised for adults to talk about the topic together.

Continuation in 2026: continue building together
Also in 2026 the Safe Together Strong Together campaign is going to be continued. After the initial message ‘We are all ears’, which basically focuses on listening and openness, in 2026 the campaign will focus on how to act in situations of violence, neglect, or abuse.

Appeal: we can do this together

Safety begins with seeing, daring to speak up, and not looking away. We can do this together.
