SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - With paradisiacal views, delicious, diverse cuisine, and all the activities and amenities needed for a fun-filled trip, it’s no wonder why so many holidaymakers choose to spend their days exploring the island of Sint Maarten.
This tropical gem is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Caribbean Sea to the west. For many, its allure lies in its island way of life that’s inextricably connected to its stunning waters.
However, sadly, not all is well in paradise – and just like the rest of the world, Sint Maarten’s marine life is suffering. As the fourth most popular sea to visit in the world, the Caribbean Sea becomes a dumping ground for thousands of tons of plastic each year.
It goes without saying that if you’re heading to Sint Maarten, you’ll need to take precautions so as not to add to the challenges to ocean sustainability. Following these three tips will ensure you have a wonderful time while keeping it in mind.
Pack mindfully
There have been a number of initiatives introduced in Sint Maarten to tackle the problem of building plastic pollution. You can do your bit by avoiding single-use plastics that contribute to harmful waste.
Pay attention to what you pack in your luggage, and if you need to bring any items in plastic packaging, dispose of them properly after use. Likewise, make sure to use reef-safe sunscreen while you’re on the island, to avoid chemicals that are toxic to marine life being released into the water.
Keep a safe distance from marine life
There are lots of coastal activities and water sports to take advantage of in Sint Maarten, but it’s crucial to exercise caution while enjoying them. Always keep a safe distance from marine life, including plants and coral, when swimming, diving, or spending time on the beach – it can be easy to underestimate how little it takes for damage to be done. Unless you’re an experienced diver, it’s best to stick to snorkelling on the surface so as not to disrupt the underwater world below.
Get involved in local initiatives
To do good while still enjoying Sint Maarten’s beautiful coast, weave sustainability into your trip and get involved with local conservation projects. There are a number of non-profits and other organisations that offer “voluntourism” opportunities, like plastic recycling activities, beach cleans, and even beach patrols to monitor sea turtle nests. There are many ways to make a difference, and doing so will ensure your time on the island is as meaningful and impactful as it is enjoyable.
If you’re not able to take part in a conservation activity directly, there are other ways to do your bit. Even a small donation of cash that would’ve otherwise been spent on souvenirs will go a long way in supporting local organisations to continue doing good.
Why Sint Maarten, and why sustainability?
Sint Maarten is a beautiful destination worth preserving, for all the living beings that call it home. But when it comes to sustainability, it takes the small actions of many individuals to make a lasting, positive impact. As you explore the island, treat people and wildlife with compassion and respect, and remember why it’s worth giving back.
