SINT MAARTEN (SIMPSON BAY) - This Saturday, the prize giving of the Regatta Art Competition took place at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club. Over 350 children participated in this year’s Regatta Art Competition, showcasing the artistic talent amongst our local youngsters.
Assignments challenged the youth to create art in relation with the annual St. Maarten Regatta, nature, and recycling to create awareness of the event, as well as the importance of looking after the environment. Many schools participated again by making the assignments part of the curriculum, however several kids also entered artworks made at home.
After the artwork was handed in, two judges, Tess Verheij, from Art Craft Café and Zdenka Kiric from The Art Box Gallery, decided on 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners over each age group and each assignment. “All kids really did a great job this year, there was a high level of creativity. It is wonderful to see how many talented kids there are on the island,” said Zdenka Kiric.
The prize giving ceremony was combined with an exposition of all the artwork. A lot of children came to the Sint Maarten Yacht Club to show their artwork to their family. “It was wonderful to see this project come together, from creating the assignments, to seeing children work on it and of course the actual end products. Bringing this event back after 2 years of absence wasn’t as difficult as initially expected, as schools and kids were very keen to participate again.” Stated Linda Koning, organizer of the Regatta Art Competition.
The prizes of the winners varied according to the age groups. Fun toys and games were sponsored by Shipwreck Shops and Top1Toys. In addition, a lot of gift certificates were handed out to winners, thanks to our sponsors Aqua Mania Adventures, Seaside Nature Park, Rainforest Adventures, Funtopia, Trisport, Random Wind, The Phoenix, The Scuba Shop and Rhino Safari.
