71-year old French national guilty in human trafficking. 38 Cubans may have been on their way to St. Martin

PHILIPSBURG – 38 Cubans who ended up in U.S. territory in April 2015 after boarding the Mazurka that belonged to Alain R. Leichtnam (71) from St. Lucia, pleaded guilty this week inducing aliens to enter the United States in violation of the law.

The Mazurka sailing vessel left St. Lucia and was intercepted by U.S. officials at Coral Bay on the East End of St. John’s, U.S. Virgin Islands.

23-old native of St. Lucia, K. M. St. Luce, was a material witness in the case.  St. Luce was also on the vessel at the time.  She was under the impression that the vessel was heading to St. Martin, and that is what she told U.S. authorities, but overheard the Cubans saying St. John’s and St. Thomas.

Sentencing will take place in December.
