SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – Police in The Hague are investigating a film that appears to show officers beating and kicking a person lying on the ground after they were arrested at a demonstration.

Omroep West reported that the footage was filmed from a block of flats overlooking the Joubertplantsoen in the city’s Transvaal district, during a coronavirus protest on Sunday.

One officer can be seen standing over a person lying on the ground, surrounded by several of his colleagues. The officer kicks the person in the head, hits them with a baton and shouts at them to ‘leave my neighbourhood alone and leave my city alone’.

Police would not confirm the details of the footage, but said they were investigating the circumstances.

A spokesman for the city’s police division said officers were confronted during the protest by ‘excessive violence from a group of more than 50 people’ who attacked them with illegal fireworks.

Local political party Hart voor Den Haag/Groep de Mos has tabled written questions to the city council. ‘You can see officers here using excessive force,’ councillor Arjen Dubbelaar told Omroep West.

‘I want to know when and where these images were filmed and what the events were that led up to this violent behaviour.’
