SINT MAARTEN (PHILIPSBURG) – All branches of the Windward Islands Bank (WIB) will be closed on Thursday, September 16 in connection with the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur.
Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement in Judaism, the most solemn of Jewish religious holidays, marking when Jewish people ask God for forgiveness and repent.
On this day, Jews ask God for forgiveness for their sins to secure their fate. Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah are known as Judaism's "High Holy Days”.
In 2021, Yom Kippur will begin in the evening of Wednesday, 15 September and ends in the evening of Thursday, 16 September.
