WEATHER:  

Tonight through Monday morning: Partly cloudy to cloudy and hazy with brief isolated showers.

Monday midday through evening: Generally cloudy and breezy with isolated showers and possible isolated thunderstorms

SURFACE WINDS: 
Tonight through Monday evening: East-northeast to southeasterly with a gentle to moderate breeze of 08 to 18 mph and higher gusts possible.

SYNOPSIS:  

Moderate winds are expected to transport pockets of moisture across the local area and account for brief isolated showers tonight through tomorrow morning. Thereafter, an increase in cloudiness, with showers and thunder are expected as the outer bands of Tropical Storm Karen moves across the eastern Caribbean.

A small craft advisory is in effect for St. Maarten as above normal seas will remain across the region. Small craft operators and sea bathers should exercise extreme caution.

STATE OF THE SEA:  Moderate to rough         WAVES/SWELLS: 6 to 9 feet

SPECIAL FEATURES: 

1. At 05:00 pm, the center of Tropical Storm Karen was located near latitude 12.9 north, longitude 62.7 west or about 355 miles south of St. Maarten.
On the forecast track, the center of Karen will continue to move away from the Windward Islands this evening, and then across the eastern Caribbean Sea tonight and Monday.

The center of Karen is forecast to pass about 175 miles west-southwest of St. Maarten on Tuesday afternoon. 

Maximum sustained winds remain near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours. 

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km) from the center. 

The latest estimated minimum central pressure reported was 1007 mb (29.74 inches). 

2. Satellite imagery indicates that a broad area of low pressure has formed in association with a strong tropical wave over the far eastern Atlantic. The associated thunderstorm activity continues to show signs of organization, and a tropical depression or tropical storm is expected to form tonight while the system moves generally westward over the eastern tropical Atlantic at 15 to 20 mph.
