SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – A short-lived whirlwind picked up on the IJ waterway in Amsterdam on Friday evening, providing a spectacular and rare view for locals and tourists in the area.
The whirlwind was seen in the Oosterdok, between the city’s main railway stations and the Nemo science museum and filmed by Marie Hemelrijk. ‘I was a bit scared that it would come my way, so all I could do was stay inside,’ she said.
The wind speed was probably no higher than 100kph, according to weather bureau Weerplaza and caused little damage. One boat was hit by falling debris and a couple of trees were blown down, broadcaster NOS said.
