NETTLE BAY – Preliminary results from the International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) this past weekend reveals that 107 trash bags with 6158 pounds of trash were collected by approximately 247 volunteers who took part in the ICC. Nettle Bay, La Belle Creole, was the location where the volunteers put on their gloves and grabbed their trash bags and got to work in cleaning the beach. Weigh masters were Dr. Jay Haviser and Ferdie Odono.
Volunteers felt that they can help make a difference by cleaning the beaches resulting in a safer and cleaner environment for all marine life. What washes ashore unto the beach, was once floating in the water.
Ocean Conservancy’s ICC goes back to 1986 when volunteers started to collect data. In 2013, nearly 650,000 volunteers in 92 countries and locations joined the effort by gathering more than 12.3 million pounds of trash from beaches and waterways.
Ocean Conservancy educates and empowers citizens to take action on behalf of the ocean. The organization brings people together to find solutions for our water planet.
Ocean Conservancy’s ICC is a partnership with volunteer organizations and individuals around the globe which engages people to remove trash from the world’s beaches and waterways identify sources of debris and change the behaviours that cause marine debris in the first place.
