Political consensus critical ahead of Somalia election: UN mission chief

INTERNATIONAL, 21 November 2019, Peace and Security - With Somalia scheduled to hold “one-person, one-vote” elections next year, leaders must act now to break the “stalemate” between the central government and federal member states, the top UN official in the country told the Security Council on Thursday. The election will mark just the third time that Somalia has had universal suffrage since independence in 1960.   UN Special Representative James Swan underscored the need to forge political consensus to realize what he described as the “ambitious agenda for 2020”. “This will entail dialogue and compromise between the central government and Federal Member States; between the executive and legislature; between current office-holders and those now out of power; and between elite leaders and those community elders, civil society...

Missile strike kills at least 12 civilians, including children, in Syria’s Idlib: UN humanitarians

INTERNATIONAL, 21 November 2019, Peace and Security - Violence in Syria continues to kill and maim civilians with reports that missiles fired into settlements for people fleeing conflict in the country’s northwest on Wednesday night, killed at least 12 people and wounded dozens more, including children, UN humanitarians said on Thursday. “Reports of shelling near the Qah IDP camp near the Turkish border in Idlib last night caused damage to a nearby maternity hospital”, Fran Equiza, UNICEF Syria Representative for Syria, told journalists in Geneva. “Children were also among the reported casualties; nearby IDP camps were also destroyed.”     Echoing those comments, Mark Cutts, UN Deputy Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria Crisis, called for an investigation into the “horrific” incident. “I find it sickening that missiles hit vulnerable civilians,...

UN experts urge Turkey to repatriate Irish woman associated with terror group

INTERNATIONAL, 21 November 2019, Peace and Security - Turkey must ensure that an Irish woman and her infant daughter who are being held in custody there are repatriated, independent UN experts said in a statement released on Thursday. The woman, Lisa Smith, has been described in press reports as a supporter of the ISIL terror group, and former member of the Irish military. Ms. Smith and her child were transferred to Turkish custody following the bombing of a camp housing thousands of people, including suspected family members of ISIL extremists northeast Syria, and her exact whereabouts are currently unknown. The UN experts expressed concern about the vulnerability of the infant, and that Ms. Smith may be facing ill-treatment in custody. The Special Rapporteurs are insisting...

FROM THE FIELD: Gaza men advocate for an end to early marriage

INTERNATIONAL, 21 November 2019, Human Rights - A group of thirty men in Gaza have succeeded in preventing the early marriage of girls under the age of 18, from 50 different families, thanks to a training programme supported by the UN gender agency, UN Women. One of them, Mossa Abu Taema, convinced the father of a 16-year-old in one of the most conservative villages in eastern Khan Younis, a border town in the Gaza Strip, to cancel her wedding and allow her to continue her education. An estimated 21 per cent of marriages in Gaza in 2017, involved girls under-18. Ahead of the annual 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign which begins on 25 November, read more here about how men are reversing traditional norms and promoting...

Young activists do the talking as UN marks World Children’s Day

INTERNATIONAL, 20 November 2019, Human Rights - Children were both seen and heard in the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, World Children’s Day, during a celebration to commemorate 30 years since the adoption of a milestone treaty that protects their rights. The ceremony was among numerous events this year taking stock of progress achieved under the landmark Convention on the Rights of the Child. “In world capitals and buildings like this, adults talk about children’s rights. But today, young people don’t want to be talked about. We want to do the talking”, declared actress Millie Bobby Brown, star of the hit Netflix series ‘Stranger Things’ and the youngest-ever Goodwill Ambassador with the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Indeed, they have a lot to say. Dante Vegara, an 11-year-old climate activist from Chile,...
