Minister Lee says Country Losing the War on Mosquito Prevention

POND ISLAND – Minister of Public Health Emil Lee during Wednesday’s press briefing wishes the family whose new-born baby was diagnosed with Microcephaly all the best under the current circumstances.

The Minister said that the person is a non-resident of Sint Maarten. To date the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labour did not receive an official report about the case.

Minister Lee added that it has not been confirmed what the cause is of the Microcephaly in the new-born, and that there could be multiple reasons including Zika.

The Minister pointed out that the island is not winning the war against mosquito’s.  While walking along the Oyster Pond road he has observed all kinds of items that persons have dumped on the side of the road indiscriminately, all potential mosquito breeding sites.

Minister Lee said that the nation should consider the Zika case a near miss and dodging of the bullet to-date, and thereby urging the community to be more vigilant because government cannot do it alone where it concerns the elimination of mosquito’s.
